The Epic Baja 500 Experience From Behind The Wheel Of The THR Motortsports Machine

The aroma of hot baked churros and bacon-wrapped hot dogs swirl through the tightly woven throng of the world's most fervent off-road race fans. As the sun rises and the early morning fog lifts from the Pacific Ocean rises up over the mountain tops that cradle the cultured city, the excitement of the Baja 500 builds, working its way toward a magnificent crescendo. The scent of race gas ignites a frenzy. An engine and then another and yet others erupt.

The loud barks from the throttle reverberate and even snap to attention, bursting through the city walls and spilling deep into the canyons that carry the legendary race course onto its epic journey.

The fans flock toward the horsepower in even greater numbers as the sun begins to break the morning mist. The flag man prepares himself. He releases his clutch on the green flag with one hand and raises it with the other.

The THR Motorsports machine, piloted by Mikey Childress, takes to the start line. And great anticipation swells, as in that moment of calm, the green flag remains suspended before the floodgates of adrenaline are unleashed into the desert.

It is then, as if having held the breathe for a minute's time, the green flag unfurls and whips into an erratic dance. The THR Motorsports machine lets loose of the raw horsepower bound from within its Kroyer Racing Engine. The rabid bark from the mighty General Tires bite deep into all available traction and then some. The front end lifts skyward. The King Shocks experience full droop. And the tale of the 2011 Baja 500 unfolds from behind the wheel of the THR Motorsports entry.

Childress charged forward into his typical race pace, making passes and taking on greater positions the further into the race he navigated the team's four-wheel effort. After a day of overcoming mechanical issues, the crew managed to muster a fifth in class after a stellar performance by the entire crew and its sponsors.
