Childress Breaks Loose Of The Bounty To Take The Win At Max Norris Memorial

When you want to grab someone's attention in the desert racing world, you place a bounty on the head of Mikey Childress. That may reel in a raucus crowd of dirt bike racers anxious at the opportunity to win some loot and take the win over Childress, but beating him at his own game isn't always as easy as it sounds, even if for the Alta Visa Events (AVE) Cal City Super Course Desert Series, Childress was returning from a Baja injury that had resulted in 10 stitches to his hand just a few weeks prior. Childress was by no means at the top of his game.

"One slightly hurt Mickey Childress is faster than most [other racers]," said race promoter Lou Peralta to Cycle News Reporter Elias Vidal. "I've known Mickey since he was a pup, and I've never seen anyone ride so fast while hurt."

The round three race featured a Le Mans-style start for the moderately fast 20-mile desert course. And by the first lap, Childress had already mounted a solid 35-second lead over Honda rider Garrett Osteen. By the second lap, the gap thickened and Childress continued to pull away, posting a 52.1-mph average speed over Osteen's 50.0-mph lap.
